Developing and deploying IoT sensor networks for planetary analogue missions during astronaut geological training.

ESA and NASA astronauts training in the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote

During the ESA Pangaea 2021 campaign in Lanzarote, I worked as a consultant in a real-time data acquisition. Working alongside astronauts from ESA and NASA (including members of the Artemis team). I developed and deployed a custom IoT sensor network designed for remote, infrastructure-less environments. The sensor modules use LoRa self-healing mesh networking to provide telemetry in “blackout” zones like volcanic tubes and deep craters. I also worked to on IT setup for the campaign, including the integration of electronic field book (EFB) and the troubleshooting of communication links between the field crews and the operation controls room.
